European Senior Tour professional and MacWet ambassador, Gary Wolstenholme secured a memorable Spanish double this weekend when he won a thrilling contest at the Benahavis Senior Masters.
Gary Wolstenholme claimed his second European Senior Tour victory in the space of three weeks after a five under par final round of 66 was enough to see off the challenge of former Ryder Cup Captain Mark James and former European Tour star Mark Mouland in a thrilling finale at the Benahavis Senior Masters.
The two Marks and Gary hotly contested the lead all day with the lead moving back and forth between the three as the tournament came to a close. Other highly experienced competitors in the mix towards the end on Sunday were Mike Harwood and Barry Lane. In the end, it was Gary's legendary putting prowess that sealed the success as he holed a 15 foot putt for birdie on the 17th hole.
After returning from an impressive showing at the US Senior PGA Championship, where he battled back valiantly from a 79 in the first round to finish in the top 30 last week, Gary's play in Benahavis was magnificent from the start. After opening with a flawless bogey-free 67 on Friday, Gary followed this up with another 67 on Saturday and went one better on Sunday to finish the tournament on a 13 under par total of 200.
Gary's fantastic closing round 66 included vital back to back birdies at the 6th, 7th and 8th holes, as well as two more at the 10th and 11th, before the decisive birdie at the par 5 17th.
"Obviously I'm delighted. I had five months off and I had no idea what I was going to come out with this season but to win the two events in Spain and make the cut in America (at the US Senior PGA Championship), having shot a 79 in the first round, is more than I could have possibly predicted."
The next tournament on the European Senior Tour is the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship, which gets under way this week at De Vere Slaley Hall in Hexham. After winning the first two European events of the season, Gary will go in to the tournament as one of the favourites for the prestigious event.
MacWet would like to extend their congratulations to Gary whose transition been from the Amateur game to his success on the European Senior Tour has been fantastic. MacWet is proud to support Gary and provide him with gripping, ultimate performance gloves for the European Tour.
